The Diepkloof Arst Academy commemoration walk was a success, with collaborations of the two high schools, Madibane and Namedi High school in Diepkloof Zone 3. About a 150 grade 8 and 9 students, teachers and Marshals took part in the walk as to commemorate the youth of June 16 1976.Before the walk a speech from Sizwe Mabanga inspired the students and encouraged them to focus on building a better future for themselves. The walk ended at the Hector Peterson Museum were students went in the museum for free and they got to learn more about the events that led to the June 16 massacre. The students were also happy for the fact that they experience what the students of that time felt and they understood the  power of youth  when they come together to voice an a opinion or and idea. We would like to thank Namedi and Madibane High School, Volunteers(Marshals) , Hector Peterson Museum, SAPS , Learners for making this project a success.

VIVA THE YOUTH OF SOUTH AFRICA

The June 16 Commemoration Walk

The Diepkloof Arts Academy acknowledges the debt owed by all black South Africans to the students who gave their lives in Soweto on June 16 1976. We feel that over the years the June 16 public holiday has been degraded into a senseless party hence we started the initiative. The June 16 Commemoration Walk is a reminder to the youth of the importance of the day and the influence young people have in determining their future. The TDAA has invited and involved Grade 8 students from two high schools in Diepkloof namely: Namedi Secondary School and Madibane High School to be part of the project.
The event is taking place on the 15th of June from 09:00 till 12:00, participants will meet at the Space between Madibane and Namedi High Schools in Diepkloof Zone 3 and walk to the Hector Peterson Memorial in Commemoration of the June 16 Soweto Uprising. The visit to the museum is too make students learn and be aware of the importance of June 16 1976. Various speakers who were part the struggle or involved in the 1976 Soweto Uprising will be invited to come share their experience with the learners.
