The June 16 Commemoration Walk

The Diepkloof Arts Academy acknowledges the debt owed by all black South Africans to the students who gave their lives in Soweto on June 16 1976. We feel that over the years the June 16 public holiday has been degraded into a senseless party hence we started the initiative. The June 16 Commemoration Walk is a reminder to the youth of the importance of the day and the influence young people have in determining their future. The TDAA has invited and involved Grade 8 students from two high schools in Diepkloof namely: Namedi Secondary School and Madibane High School to be part of the project.
The event is taking place on the 15th of June from 09:00 till 12:00, participants will meet at the Space between Madibane and Namedi High Schools in Diepkloof Zone 3 and walk to the Hector Peterson Memorial in Commemoration of the June 16 Soweto Uprising. The visit to the museum is too make students learn and be aware of the importance of June 16 1976. Various speakers who were part the struggle or involved in the 1976 Soweto Uprising will be invited to come share their experience with the learners.
